Influenced by her previous profession in fashion design, Fiona Candy explores clothing’s impact on the body:
how its substance and tactility shapes comportment, gesture, mannerism. She finds ways to access these subtle movement forms that communicate before and beyond language. The latest in a run of related works centres on contact made between foot and ground,
where many believe we are the most fundamentally
‘in touch’ with our surroundings. This new exhibition is purposefully sited in Northampton to connect with the region’s long and fascinating tradition of shoemaking.
A series of material and audio exhibits splice across
the senses and bring attention to the presence of the body, in motion. Far from inert or inanimate, shoes are conveyed as kinetic, percussive instruments of identity, inseparable from the energy of wearers, or the qualities
of the places, spaces and moments in which they are stepped into life.
